Frequently Asked Questions

Why did the computer order up that card?

During the first round of bidding, any player can order the dealer to pick up the turned card, making that suit trump. The AI evaluates hand strength — typically two or more trump cards, ideally including a Bower. If the AI is in the dealer seat and all other players passed, it may be operating under Stick the Dealer rules and must call trump even on a weak hand. See Stick the Dealer for how this rule works.

What does going alone mean?

Going alone means a player declares they’ll play without their partner’s help — the partner sits out the hand entirely. Winning all 5 tricks alone earns 4 points instead of the usual 2 for a team march. It’s the highest-scoring single play in the game. See the full Going Alone strategy guide to learn when a hand is strong enough.

Why couldn’t I play a card from a different suit?

Euchre requires you to follow suit — if hearts are led and you hold a heart, you must play it. You can only play a different suit (including trump) when you’re completely void in the led suit. The most common confusion: the Left Bower (Jack of the same color as trump) counts as trump, not its printed suit. If diamonds are led and you hold the Left Bower while hearts are trump, you are not required to play it — but you cannot play it as a diamond. See card rankings for the full trump hierarchy.

How does euchre scoring work?

The team that called trump (the makers) scores 1 point for winning 3–4 tricks, 2 points for all 5 tricks (a march), or 4 points for a successful lone hand. If they win fewer than 3 tricks, they’re euchred — the opposing team scores 2 points. First team to 10 points wins the game. Full details in the scoring guide.

What is the best hand in euchre?

The best possible hand is both Bowers (Right and Left) plus the Ace, King, and Queen of trump — all five cards guaranteed to win tricks. In practice, a strong loner hand is both Bowers, the Ace of trump, and two off-suit Aces. Any hand with both Bowers and the Ace of trump is almost always worth going alone. See card rankings for how every card ranks.
