Bidding
Starting left of the dealer, each player gets one bid. They may bid a number of tricks (with 4 players, usually a minimum of 6 or 7 out of 12) or pass. Each bid must be higher than the last. You don’t name trump while bidding.
- The high bidder names trump (or no-trump) and leads the first trick.
- If everyone passes, the dealer is usually stuck with the minimum bid (Stick the Dealer).
- Shooting the moon: a bid of all 12 tricks, played alone. The shooter usually passes 1 or 2 cards to their partner and receives the same number back, and the partner then sits out.

Example (4 players): Team A bids 8 in hearts and takes 9 tricks, so they score +9 and Team B scores +3. If Team A had taken only 7, they’d score −8 and Team B +5.
Some groups score the bid instead of tricks taken, or give the defenders nothing on a made bid. Write your house rules on the score sheet.
Strategy
Count trump in pairs. With 14 trump in play, your team holding “both Rights” is a big deal. If you hold one Right Bower, the other is somewhere, and it beats yours only if it’s played first in the same trick.
Bid your hand plus one. A common rule of thumb for four players: count your sure tricks, then add one trick for your partner. Adjust after watching how your partner bids.
No-trump needs aces. You want three or four aces and a long suit to cash. Without trump nobody can ruff your aces, but a long suit you can’t reach is useless.
Lead back your partner’s trump. When your partner names trump, lead trump at your first chance to pull the opponents’ bowers.
Duplicate-card timing. Leading a card whose twin is still out is risky late in a trick but safe when you lead it: as the first played, it wins any tie.
